Cocktail: Summer of Gallantry

I’m a vermouth lover.
I think it’s as delicious on its own over ice as it is an excellent blending partner. I happily add a generous splash to a martini and can’t understand why anyone would forgo the herbal/fruity/spicey liqueur in favour of straight vodka or gin.
A few summers ago, whilst facing an abundance of grapefruit, I came up with this big batch citrusy cocktail to sip poolside. We couldn’t figure out what to call it, so my sister just started saying, “make me an Erin.”
We called it that for a while, but it seems immodest, so I’ve changed it to Summer of Gallantry after reading about the most admirable drinkers of the Lost Generation and how many articles weave the gallantry with the general frivolity of the time.
Perhaps that’s a better suited moniker: Gallantry and Frivolity.

Summer of Gallantry
As always, freshly squeezed juice is best. It’s a small investment for big flavour. If you are making this ahead of time, leave the ice out until just before serving so the drink doesn’t dilute.
Makes: 8, 4oz drinks
Bartender level: easy
Ingredients:
- 2 cups white vermouth
- 1 cup gin
- ¾ cup lemon juice
- ¼ cup grapefruit juice
- 1 ruby red grapefruit, sliced, for garnish
How to Make It:
- Place a grapefruit wheel into each glass.
- Put a few scoops of ice and remaining grapefruit wheels into a pitcher.
- Add all ingredients and stir.
- Pour into glasses and serve.
