Juliet & Romeo Cocktail

A pale green cocktail in a coup garnished with mint

A little on the nose, but whatever.

Is it cringe to recommend a cocktail for Valentine's Day that's named for literature's most famous lovers?

Probably.

But don't let that deter you from making this refreshing and uplifting drink. Plus – creator Toby Maloney gave Juliet top billing, so there's a bit of a feminist vibe to the whole thing, which maybe makes having a boyfriend cool again

Valentine's Day happens to be my birthday, and this year, I'm marking it down south, so you know I will be pool noodle-deep in smart and snappy cocktails, the Juliet & Romeo chief amongst them.

A cooling blend of cucumber, mint, and lime enhanced by gin, Maloney wanted a drink to appeal to gin haters. Apparently, he succeeded, as it's been reported his Chicago bar has sold upwards of 20 a day, second to only the Old Fashioned.

Since the Juliet & Romeo's creation in 2007, it's become a modern classic having quickly spread across good cocktail bars everywhere.

Juliet & Romeo

Rosewater really packs a punch, so don't go overboard. A little goes a long way.

Makes: 1 drink
Bartender Level: easy

Ingredients
  • 2 oz London Dry gin
  • 3 slices cucumber
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 mint sprig
  • 1 oz lime juice
  • 1 oz simple syrup
  • 3 drops rosewater
  • Mint leaf or rose petal, for garnish
How to Make It:
  1. Combine gin, cucumber, and salt in an empty shaker and muddle the cucumber to release the juice.
  2. Add all remaining ingredients, except the garnish, fill the shaker with ice and shake well to combine and chill, about 20 seconds.
  3. Double strain into a chilled coupe.
  4. Garnish with mint leaf, and an optional spritz of rosewater
